With aperitivo starting at 6pm and clubs not closing until 4am, Milan very much comes alive at night. From big venues with top DJs to hidden gems with live jazz music, Milan is sure to have something that suits your taste. At Collegiate, we want you to be able to make the most out of your university experience, so it’s important that you have fun and stay safe while doing so.

We’ve put together some top tips for making the most out of your clubbing experience in Milan.

What are the best tips for partying in Milan?

Start the Night with an Aperitivo

In Italy, the night begins with the cultural ritual, aperitivo. Aperitivo is a post-work drink that often includes a spritz or a glass of wine accompanied by a variety of appetizers like cured meats, olives and crisps. It’s the perfect way to catchup with friends and unwind after a day of work or lectures. Popular spots for aperitivo in Milan include Navigli where you can sit along the canal, enjoy the scenery and a guaranteed lively atmosphere.

Plan Your Evening

Milan is a huge city with lots to offer, but this does mean that venues can be quite far apart. To avoid spending half your night travelling from one place to another, make sure to plan your evening well. Choose an aperitivo spot that’s relatively close to your next destination, whether that’s a club, bar or live music venue.

Take a Small Bag

When going out in Milan, less is more. Only carry the essentials: your I.D., debit card, some cash, keys, and maybe some lipstick. Milan is known for its pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like clubs, so it’s best to travel light. Additionally, many clubs charge for cloakroom services, so by keeping your belongings to a minimum, you can avoid this extra cost.

Organise Your Travel

Milan’s metro system is super-efficient and can pretty much get you to almost anywhere in the city, but it does close around 1am. Before heading out, make sure you have a plan for getting home. Whether you opt for an Uber, a taxi or the nighttime bus service, it’s important to know your route and avoid walking home alone at night. If you’re with a group, stick together to stay safe.

Avoid Certain Areas

As with any major city, Milan does have neighbourhoods that are best avoided after dark. Areas around the Central Station (Central), Quarto Oggiaro, San Siro and Corvetto can be less safe at night. Always stay aware of your surroundings and stick to well-lit and populated areas.

Be Prepared to Pay Entry

In Milan, most clubs charge an entry fee which typically ranges from 10 to 15 euros per person. However, this often includes a free drink at the bar, so it’s not all bad news. Make sure you have cash or card on hand for entry, and keep in mind that some clubs may require you to buy tickets beforehand, especially on the weekend or for big events.

The Best Clubs in Milan for Students!

Milan has no shortage of clubs, but some are particularly popular among students. Here are a few you should check out:

Fabrique

With a capacity of 3,100 people, Fabrique Milano is the largest indoor club in Milan. It’s now become a landmark for music lovers, hosting live concerts and DJ sets throughout the week. Whether you’re into techno music or live performances from big named bands, there’s always something happening here.

Gattopardo

Located in Corso Sempione, Gattopardo is one of Milan’s most unique nightclubs. Housed in a stunning baroque church, this club offers a mix of galas, fashion shows and techno gigs. The immersive atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone looking for an unforgettable night out.

Tunnel

Situated underground, right under the railway tracks of Milan’s Central Station, Tunnel is a popular venue for techno music enthusiasts. The club hosts lots of life performances from bands and cover bands throughout the week, while the weekend is dedicated to its underground DJs.

Alcatraz

Known for its huge event space, Alcatraz hosts everything from fashion shows to themed club nights. In fact, if you’re feeling nostalgic, don’t miss their ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ night, where you can dance the night away to hits from the 1980s and 1990s.

Blue Notes

Looking for a different vibe all together? Head to Blue Note, Milan’s best jazz club. With an international reputation, this venue draws artists in from around the globe. Enjoy a sit-down meal and a show in the early evening before the venue transforms into a lively bar later in the night.
